What is an Emerald (Panna)?

Emerald, known as Panna or Marakata in Sanskrit, is a variety of the mineral beryl (beryllium aluminium silicate) that gets its iconic green color from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. The deeper and more saturated the green  and the fewer the inclusions the more valuable the stone. Emerald belongs to the ‘Big Four’ precious gemstones alongside Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond.

In Vedic Jyotish, Emerald is the Navratna stone of Mercury (Budh) the planet of intellect, communication, commerce, writing, and analytical thinking.
